Velogic engineers the first Plastic Odyssey micro-factory in Mauritius

24 Jun 2025

Mauritius proudly welcomed its first Plastic Odyssey micro-factory, an initiative which turns plastic waste into valuable resources. This milestone was made possible through the collaboration between Rogers Group, Rogers Hospitality and Plastic Odyssey, as part of their exploration in the Indian Ocean from April to July 2025. The initiative falls under the 'Expédition Plastique Océan Indien’ (ExPLOI), led by the Indian Ocean Commission (COI) with support from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM). At the core of this initiative is Velogic, the integrated international logistics platform of Rogers Group. Beyond its core logistics operations, Velogic has leveraged its in-house expertise in container refurbishment to play a key role in bringing this impactful plastic waste solution to life in Mauritius.

From container to circular solution: Logistics that empowers meaningful change

The micro-factory, an innovative recycling unit, is housed in a shipping container fully refurbished by Velogic. Once operational in Bel Ombre, it will serve as a regional hub for treating plastic waste, turning it into useful, reusable resources.

“At Velogic, we are proud to be part of such a meaningful project. Since 2007, we have been giving a second life to old containers, and the Plastic Odyssey project aligns with our mission and expertise. The micro-factory container has been fully refurbished from start to finish, and we have also customised it with openings adapted to the specific needs of Plastic Odyssey’s production equipment,” shares Gregory de Comarmond, Operation Manager – Depot & Workshop at Velogic.

By converting retired shipping containers into modular, mobile units for industrial and community use, Velogic provides low-footprint, transportable infrastructure that supports sustainable development across the region.

Aligned with Rogers Group’s Sustainability Framework

Velogic’s support in implementing the Plastic Odyssey micro-factory reflects Rogers Group’s commitment to driving meaningful change through high-impact actions that promote environmental resilience. The final phase involves completing the necessary preparations and transporting the fully equipped container to Bel Ombre, where the micro-factory will be installed and made operational. This project is another step toward marine conservation, plastic waste reduction, and community engagement, while reinforcing the pillars of biodiversity preservation and circular economy.
